Breast Implant Removal and Revisions
Complications arise from many types of breast implant (breast enlargement surgery). These problems
can happen at any point in the life of the breast implants. Patients that run into these complications will need to have a revision or removal
procedure performed.
When a patient decides that they are unhappy with their breast implants the cosmetic surgeon will advise them of their options. A revision can be
performed and different types of breast implants can be used. These implants can be smaller or larger than the previous ones if that is why the patient
is unhappy with the way that they were before. While the cosmetic surgeon performs the breast augmentation they will make an incision in alternate area rather than the one used in prior
surgeries.
Life changes such as age and pregnancy can also have an impact on breast implants. A revision can be planned when this happens. A cosmetic surgeon can
also perform a breast lift during the breast implant surgery to help correct any sag that may have occurred during the life change.
Deflation occurs in many types of saline breast implants. This usually is caused by a small puncture wound to the implant itself and the liquid
contained inside slowly leaks out. The body will absorb this liquid and the breast can look flat when this occurs. A cosmetic surgeon will often remove
the old implant and replace the deflated one. Patients and cosmetic surgeons can also opt to have different implants placed during the procedure.
Capsular contracture is another known complication created by having breast implants. Scar tissue forms around the implant and causes it look deformed
and out of place. If this happens the cosmetic surgeon will need to do a breast implant removal procedure. During the removal the surgeon will also
remove some of the scar tissue. If the patient wishes the cosmetic surgeon can place in another breast implant during the surgery but will opt to use a
different location for its placement.
It is possible for the cosmetic surgeon to also correct other issues with the breast in the same procedure such as correction of puffy nipples or even
fix inverted nipples.
A complete breast implant removal is some times suggested for patients that have medical conditions. Patients themselves will often opt for a removal
of the implants if they are not satisfied with them. When a cosmetic surgeon performs this type of surgery they will often suggest that the patient
have a breast lift procedure to help with the sagging skin left behind by removing the implant.
